Union Hospital IT staff members don’t just help clinicians and others use technology, they show them how to make the most of it.

“My team always takes the initiative to find ways to help our customers use technology to make workflow and processes better. We are always challenging customers to take a look at how to maximize technology tools,” said CIO Anne Lara.

By doing so, IT staffers quickly realize they are making a big difference where it truly counts – in patient care. And, ultimately, they “feel really good about what they do,” Lara said.

To empower IT staff members to have this positive impact on patient care, Lara provides just the right combination of guidance and autonomy.

“I give them the tools and support that they need to get the job done," she said. "But at the same time, I give them the flexibility to take action on their own. Because I don’t micromanage, the employees feel empowered."
