Joyce Sensmeier, Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society’s (HIMSS) Vice President, Informatics, has recently been recognized as a Fellow with the American Academy of Nursing, a credential held by over 1,600 nursing leaders worldwide. Ms. Sensmeier will be inducted, along with 116 nurse leaders, into the Academy at the 37th Annual Meeting and Conference in Washington, DC on November 13th.

Ms. Sensmeier was Board Certified in Nursing Informatics in 1996, then joined HIMSS as Director of Professional Services in 2000. Her duties as Vice President includes overseeing clinical informatics, standards, interoperability, and privacy and security initiatives working closely with HIMSS members, clinicians, and other healthcare professionals. She has worked for HIMSS for a decade.

“With both patient care and clinical information systems experience, Joyce Sensmeier guides the clinical IT and standards harmonization efforts of HIMSS throughout the world. All of us at the Society proudly congratulate Joyce on her leadership and as a new Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing,” says Carla Smith, Executive Vice President of HIMSS.

According to the AAN, each Fellow nominee must be sponsored by two current Academy Fellows, then selected by a panel of elected and appointed Fellows. The selection is influenced by how nominees’ nursing careers have had a beneficial impact on health policies and healthcare delivery for U.S. citizens.

Some notable achievements of Ms. Sensmeier’s at HIMSS involve her being a leader in the harmonization and adoption of IT standards. These achievements include leading HIMSS’ effort to develop and manage “Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise” with co-sponsor Radiological Society of North America, which drives the adoption of clinical needs standards; leading HIMSS’ involvement with the Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP), a federal standards harmonization initiative, and collaborating with AMIA to form the Alliance for Nursing Informatics, an organization of 26 nursing informatics organizations that she co-chairs. Ms. Sensmeier also is an international speaker and author of book chapters and white papers, and contributes her expertise as an adjunct faculty member at Northwestern University in Chicago and Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Ms. Sensmeier received her BSN from Elmhurst College and her Master’s degree in Nursing Administration from St. Xavier University, both in Illinois.
