Almoosa Specialist Hospital in Saudia Arabia has been validated at the highest level of the HIMSS Analytics Electronic Medical Records Adoption Model (EMRAM).

The 440-bed private hospital in in Al Mubarraz was awarded Stage 7 of the eight-stage model EMRAM model, which scores hospitals from 0-7 relative to their inpatient electronic medical records (EMR) capabilities.

Almoosa’s facilities include a bone and joint centre, cancer centre, neuroscience centre with stroke programme, heart centre with modern cardiac modalities including a hybrid operation room and electrophysiology lab. The hospital also has a comprehensive maternity and children's programme.

WHY IT MATTERS

Achieving EMRAM Stage 7 demonstrates Almoosa’s ongoing commitment to improving patient safety and quality of clinical care through the effective use of EMR technology.

HIMSS assessors, who carried out the validation, noted the degree of structure within Almoosa’s medical, nursing and allied health professional record was a strong highlight and set an example for other hospitals looking to strengthen their use of structured forms and structured narrative.

They also observed a good connection between the nursing risk assessment and the care plan, which helped to standardise care and ensure patients with high risk factors receive appropriate and proportionate treatment.

Almoosa’s clinical decision support (CDS) opportunities have been developed in conjunction with analytics firm Elsevier, to provide additional guidance and support to clinicians wanting to adopt international best practices.

THE LARGER CONTEXT

Almoosa was validated by HIMSS late last year, following the Dar Al Shifa Hospital (DASH) in Kuwait, which achieved Stage 6 on both the EMRAM and O-EMRAM in January.

In December 2021, Dr Soliman Fakeeh Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia was awarded Stage 7 on the EMRAM and Dr Sulaiman Al-Habib Medical Group in Al Khobar, was also awarded Stage 7 EMRAM earlier in the year.

Three Saudi Arabian hospitals in the Mouwasat group based in Qatif, Damman and Riyadh also achieved Stage 7 EMRAM in June 2021.

Meanwhile, King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia was validated at Stage 7 of the HIMSS Adoption Model for Analytics Maturity (AMAM) in October 2021.

ON THE RECORD

John Rayner, regional director analytics, EMEA, HIMSS, said: “Excellent governance arrangements are in place to successfully manage a programme of this type together with strong clinical engagement and visible leadership from all members of the senior management team at Almoosa Specialist Hospital. This is a good hospital where practices are consistent and standardised.
