CPSI, which makes software aimed at rural providers and community hospitals, is acquiring Get Real Health, which develops patient engagement technologies.

WHY IT MATTERS
Through the $11 million acquisition (it could rise by an additional $14 million depending on certain performance metrics), CPSI aims to bolster its community healthcare offerings with three of Get Real Health's patient-facing tools, officials said.

Its Ellie technology is focused on chronic care management and enabling communication between patients and care managers, InstantPHR is a patient portal and CHBase aggregates clinical and personal health data to give physicians a better view of their patients' health.

THE LARGER TREND
Get Real Health has also recently launched a new product, Lydia, for migration of Microsoft HealthVault data. (Patients have until Nov. 20 to transfer their information to another personal health record.)

As the market for patient portals and consumer engagement tools evolves, CPSI is hoping this new acquisition will better position it for more effective care coordination and population health management, while offering a better patient experience for its clients.

ON THE RECORD
"The demographics and population makeup of the communities we serve support the growing demand for strategies and tools to address the ongoing management of chronic care conditions, which are prevalent in these areas," said CPSI CEO Boyd Douglas in a statement. "By acquiring Get Real Health, we can continue this effort as providers evolve to a value-based care delivery model."

"In addition to the opportunity to bring our solutions to hundreds of communities across the United States already serviced by CPSI, we will continue to empower patients around the world," said Robin Wiener, CEO of Get Real Health. "Our company culture and shared value of advancing community healthcare is clear and will continue as an important mark of distinction in the markets we serve."
