Dr Simon Eccles appointed as new Health and Care CCIO

[London, UK] Dr Simon Eccles has been appointed as the new Chief Clinical Information Officer for Health and Care in England, NHS Improvement and NHS England have confirmed today.

Dr Eccles will succeed Professor Keith McNeil, who has returned to Australia as Chief Medical Information Officer and Assistant Deputy Director General of Queensland Health.

Dr Eccles, Emergency Medicine Consultant at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, is currently the NHS England Clinical Director for Emergency Care in London.

“Digital Health is a fast paced arena, and we must ensure parties work together to drive improvements for patients, who will remain my focus as I move from Hospital work to driving the NHS IT agenda,” the new CCIO said.

Sigurd Reinton, NHS Improvement Non-Executive Director, said the joint appointment is an example of the NHS England and NHS Improvement commitment to work together to ‘harness the power of data to improve patient care while keeping costs to taxpayers to an acceptable level’, along with NHS Digital.

Dr Eccles will report to Matthew Swindells, NHS England Director for Operations and Information.
