Top officials from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs have been saying for months that they are considering replacing the proprietary VistA EHR with a commercial offering.
The public statements by former CIO LaVerne Council and recently confirmed Secretary David Shulkin, MD, follow the failed joint iEHR project VA undertook with the Defense Department — after which DoD put out bids to replace its own AHLTA homegrown EHR and ultimately awarded the initial $4 billion contract to Cerner, Accenture and Leidos.
But despite a recent Black Book report that suggested Cerner would be the best choice to replace VistA, experts are already poking holes in the notion that a commercial EHR is the best route for the VA.
