Intermountain Healthcare and Oxeon, a healthcare growth services firm, have launched Empiric Health to take the variation out of healthcare costs and outcomes.

The startup’s first offering will be based on Intermountain’s ProComp program, which clinicians created to help understand how differences in the way surgical procedures are performed – from supply utilization to staffing – impact patient outcomes and the overall cost of care.

So far, the program has created operational efficiencies, such as reducing supply costs and length of stay, that have saved $90 million.

Empiric Health employs clinical and patient outcomes data, structured according to patent-pending, physician-approved groupings to ensure accuracy. Once variation is identified, clinicians are engaged individually or at a service line level to discuss the best way to deliver care.

“The collaboration between Intermountain Healthcare and Empiric Health will help caregivers improve patient outcomes and lower costs,” Intermountain CEO Marc Harrison, MD, said in a statement. “Through Empiric Health, we will share our methodology for delivering better care – along with significant ROI and bottom-line impact – with other health systems.”

Loma Linda University Health will serve as an initial anchor customer.

“As an academic medical center, we were particularly attracted to Empiric’s ability to use real world evidence to drive clinical conversations and improve patient outcomes,” said Gary Botimer, MD, chair of Orthopedic Surgery at Loma Linda University Health.
