The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT kicked off an initiative to build an Information Sharing and Analysis Organization and put $250,000 behind the effort.

ONC said the funding will be used to help ISAO become a key player in public sector rapid response. As such, the IASO will issue warnings about potential cyber threats, provide outreach and education that improves cyber security awareness, and ideally facilitate widespread cyber threat information sharing.

“In short, the ISAO will create a more robust cyber information sharing environment,” Nicole Lurie, MD Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR), wrote in an ONC blog on Monday. “Through the resulting streamlined cyber threat information sharing process, HHS will be able to send cyber threat information to a single entity, which will be able to share that information widely to support stakeholders.”

The funding was announced in conjunction with the Health and Human Services (HHS) Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR). Combined, the two opportunities total $250,000 and carry an option to be renewed for up to five years.

The announcement is the latest in a series of cybersecurity initiatives stemming from the ONC’s strategic planning document - Connecting Health and Care for the Nation: A Shared Nationwide Interoperability Roadmap version 1.0. In that document, the ONC identified the need to “coordinate with [HHS] on priority issues related to cybersecurity for critical public health infrastructure.”
