Precision Medicine: How do we get there?

03:17 PM

In order to make good on the promise of precision medicine – the medical model that focuses on the customization of healthcare and tailors decision-making, practices and treatments to the individual – a number of components need to be in place.

The National Institutes of Health 1M patient cohort database, upon which valuable data will be captured, must be able to seamlessly and securely share data in order to advance new treatments and interventions. Therefore, the FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) standard, an open-source framework created and sustained by HL7, needs to be deployed for data to be securely shared.

The industry will be relying on advances in new technology and high-speed computing power to be able to handle the amount of voluminous data that healthcare information systems are capturing and generating. Just as important, both patients and clinicians must embrace precision medicine in order for the promise of individualized medicine and population health to be realized.
