LogicStream Health helps its 300 hospital clients nationwide realize savings and improve clinical quality of care in such areas as opioid prescribing practices and sepsis.

Clinical process improvement helped one health system eliminate up to $4 million in medication spending, according to Patrick Yoder, CEO and co-founder of LogicStream Health. The company works with hospitals to control and standardize their clinical processes.

“We’ve seen significant return on investment,” Yoder said.

At HIMSS18, the Minneapolis-based company will demonstrate its new clinical process improvement and control software platform at Booth 1473. 

“A lot of what we try to do is to bring our customers there so they can interact with other customers and share their successes,” Yoder said. 

Clinical operation executives can see how to control medication spending, including in the hot topic area of opioid use, by controlling the clinical processes around prescribing practices. 

“The core of it is the process map or framework, an outline for what processes will make the best impact on quality and cost control,” Yoder said. “It looks at how interventions are working, such as aligning the EHR with the framework.”

Aligning knowledge with clinical practices helps determine the best approach, for example, for those at high risk of having a blood clot, or an infection. This works for both large and small hospitals.

One hospital was able to eliminate a lab test and its $120,000 tab after an alignment of EHR knowledge revealed that the CK-MB test being used for the past 10 years did little to aid in the diagnosis of myocardial infarction. Each test cost only $10 but it added up.

“They basically aligned EHR knowledge to make it less likely to order that lab for myocardial damage,” Yoder said. “We can actually dive into the individual patient (information)  and care delivery personnel.”

At 4 p.m March 7, Peter Chang, MD, chief medical informatics officer for Tampa General Hospital, will present “Clinical Process Improvement for Scalable Quality Governance.” Chang will discuss his team’s two-fold approach to early sepsis detection and prevention that combined EHR-generated alerts and treatment advice with clinical process improvement and control software that enabled clinical leaders to review clinician response times and treatment decisions.
