The NHS Covid Pass is currently being used as proof of being Covid-free for residents in England wanting to access "higher-risk" settings.
In order to get the NHS Covid Pass, residents must download it via the NHS app, which is available on iOS and Android. It is also available via the NHS website.
The system then generates a QR code, with a 28-day expiry.
WHY IT MATTERS
Although it is not currently a legal requirement, some venues and nightclubs have already started asking customers to confirm their vaccination status via the NHS app. The UK government plans to make it law by the end of September, after all adults will have had the chance to be fully vaccinated.
The NHS Covid Pass can currently be used domestically if you've had a negative PCR or lateral flow test result in the past 48 hours and have reported it on the NHS website.
It can also be used for travel if two weeks have passed since your second dose, or you have had a positive PCR test result within the past six months, and have finished self-isolating.
THE LARGER CONTEXT
Across the rest of the UK, there are different processes in place which mean residents cannot simply use the NHS app to access the NHS Covid Pass.
In Scotland for example, an app is currently being developed. In the meantime, over-16's can request a paper copy of their vaccination status via the NHS inform website, or by calling 0808 196 8565.
In Wales, you can download the NHS Covid Pass, or you can request a paper copy by calling 0300 303 5667.
People in Northern Ireland can apply for the certificate online and use it for travel. However, due to technical problems and availability temporarily interrupted, holidaymakers have been asked to use the service only if they are travelling soon.
ON THE RECORD
In a recently updated GOV.UK press release, the UK Cabinet Office stated: "We encourage organisations in certain settings to use the NHS COVID Pass as a condition of entry, in order to reduce the risk of COVID-19. This will especially be the case in large, crowded settings (such as nightclubs) where people are likely to be in close proximity to others outside their household.
"To support organisations and individuals in these settings, the NHS COVID Pass will be made available through the NHS App, NHS.UK, or as a letter that can be requested by ringing NHS 119. Visitors will also be able to show text or email confirmation of test results. Organisations should ensure they are in compliance with all legal obligations, including on equalities.
"There are some settings where the NHS COVID Pass should not be used as a condition of entry, in order to ensure access for all. This includes essential services and essential retailers which have been able to stay open throughout the pandemic."
