Bon Secours taps Philips for 10-year patient monitoring collaboration

The seven-state health system seeks to standardize its patient-monitoring tools and processes at 49 hospitals and hundreds of care sites via the partnership.

Cincinnati-based Bon Secours Mercy Health is teaming up with Royal Philips to implement and scale a new patient monitoring platform over the next three years – and then monitor it over the following seven. 

WHY IT MATTERS

One of the nation’s largest Catholic health systems, BSMH has more than 1,200 care sites and 49 hospitals across Florida, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, Ohio, South Carolina and Virginia, as well as in Ireland.

The new collaboration will "transform care delivery," according to Jodi Pahl, the health system's chief nursing officer for workforce experience and nursing outcomes.

Philips said the platform can improve care workflows, enable predictable payments and enhance BSMH's innovation.

Julia Strandberg, chief business leader of Connected Care at Philips, noted that by eliminating time-consuming data roadblocks that its workers face, BSMH can bring quality care to more people.

“This partnership is a testament to BSMH's focus on strong clinical engagement and our combined commitment to improving the patient and staff experience," she said.

THE LARGER TREND

Bon Secours has focused on improving employee experiences with digital transformation, leaning into the consumer world of experience-management tech. 

With a modern system, the health system was able to gather, analyze and act on feedback coming directly from employees

"Overall, turnover's down by more than 5%, which is proof of the impact of listening and acting on feedback," Joe Filigno, vice president of HR strategy and associate experience, told Healthcare IT News last year. 

More data from patient monitoring could improve BSMH staff experiences further.

Last year, Northwell Health added enterprise-wide patient monitoring to improve patient and staff experiences. The system provided visibility into what's happening at each patient's bedside, Phyllis McCready, vice president and chief procurement officer for Northwell Health, said in the announcement.

 "This collaboration is part of our commitment to drive improved healthcare quality while reducing costs and addressing healthcare issues facing entire communities," Pahl said in a statement. 

"As BSMH’s clinical technology partner, we're leaning in to understand their needs and apply innovative technologies that can improve patient outcomes," Strandberg added.
