The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association’s Blue Health Intelligence and Healthbox announced the Data Innovation Challenge on Tuesday. Healthbox and Healthcare IT News are both owned by HIMSS.

WHY IT MATTERS

With this developer contest, the organizations are seeking “solutions that increase access to care, enhance patient engagement, and improve care delivery and outcomes,” according to a statement.

Innovators interested in participating can pick from three categories that, if chosen, will grant them access to BHI’s data.

Those three categories:

  1. Identify, predict and prioritize members and providers for real-time interventions
  2. Reduce barriers to care
  3. Enhance members' journeys through the healthcare system

WHAT THE WINNER GETS

BCBS said the winner will be granted six months access to "a subset of BHI’s database of more than 5 billion covered procedures performed annually, originating from more than 170 million active and inactive members."

The winner will also be eligible for mentoring from BCBS and HIMSS leaders, the organizations said.

HOW TO APPLY

In addition to picking the category, applicants should provide the proposed solution, expected impact, what it will take to scale, and a company overview including the team.

Submissions can be entered here until June 25, 2019. The winner will be chosen in the fall of 2019.
