Social Media reactions to the 'Top 5 worst EMR myths'

Matt Rose, also known as Hobie18, believes that Dr. Foster was misguided in his thinking. "If a physician is using a tablet PC with well designed EHR software, there doesn't need to be a loss of eye contact with a patient vs. handwriting free text," Rose said. "Medical errors are responsible for 195,000 deaths per year according to a recent study."

In response to those comments, Rob Foster explained that there is still a check box waiting to be clicked as a feature of an EMR, no matter what device-friendly utility you may use.

Many physicians are also using portable laptops or smartphones in the outpatient arena. The transition, however, is the hardest part of the process. Not only is it a man-made project to go paperless, it costs money and time to hire employees to do the job. Then again, EMRs being expensive is considered one of the myths.

The all-inclusive consensus between all commenters seems to be the costs. Are you surprised?

"Few look at the real cost of paper charts," Rose said. "Physicians with paper charts usually under-code as they don't document enough to justify the correct CPT codes."

Foster agrees. "Most practices are 2-3 docs, and $100,000 is a big deterrent including having a paper system for those docs running simultaneously who have not yet digitalized."
