Global pharmaceutical company Allergan is expanding its collaboration with ConvergeHEALTH by Deloitte and Intermountain Healthcare to include women's health. The new initiative will leverage ConvergeHEALTH's OutcomesMiner analytics platform to generate clinical insights aimed at improving patient outcomes.

"We look forward to expanding our work with Allergan to address important scientific questions regarding the unmet needs of patients treated with intrauterine devices that can be best answered from analyses of real-world data," Nicole Hobbs, MD, director of operations, the Homer Warner Center for Informatics Research at Intermountain Healthcare, said in a news release. "Our goal is to optimize patient care by leveraging the insights we generate from this type of research."

The collaboration began in April 2014 to focus on improving treatment protocols for respiratory diseases. Multiple projects on this work are at various stages. The collaborators released initial results recently at the American Thoracic Society's Annual Meeting.

"We are very encouraged with our association with ConvergeHEALTH and Intermountain and the near real-time insights we receive from OutcomesMiner help us understand patient's unmet needs," said Gavin Corcoran, chief medical officer, Allergan, in announcing the expanded collaboration.

Brett Davis, principal, Deloitte Consulting and general manager of ConvergeHEALTH by Deloitte, said expansion of the collaboration with Alergan reflects ConvergeHEALTH's ability to help life sciences and healthcare organizations worldwide make advances in translational research, real-world evidence and personalized medicines.

"Combining OutcomesMiner with Intermountain's clinical and informatics capabilities has the potential to generate insights that not only benefit patients but the entire healthcare system," Davis said. Emphasis on value-based care and on precision medicine is requiring new approaches to just about everything in healthcare, he said, and the approach to research is no exception.

"To really operate in this new environment requires not just technology, but new business models and new collaboration models," Davis told Healthcare IT News.

It's beneficial for health systems to continuously learn and understand the effects of medication, and it is particularly critical for pharmaceutical companies, like Allergan, that are working to innovate and bring new treatments to market.

Allergan will continue to work with ConvergeHEALTH and with Intermountain's Homer Warner Center for Informatics Research, which is dedicated to the discovery and implementation of innovative information technologies to enable data-driven improvements to clinical care.

"By collaborating with them we can generate insights that will help providers and patients choose the most appropriate treatments to best match their personalized needs," said  Shailja Dixit, MD, executive director, medical affairs, Allergan.
