John Muir Health taps new CISO

August has held IT security leadership positions at Sharp HealthCare, Sony Corporation of America and Pacific Life Insurance Company

John Muir Health in Walnut Creek, Calif., has hired Thomas August as chief information security officer. An information security executive with more than 20 years of experience, August assumed his new duties April 13.

Formerly, August served as director of information security at Sharp HealthCare in San Diego. In that role, he provided strategic leadership for the system's information security program which covered 16,000 employees across seven hospitals, two medical groups, a health plan and a variety of shared services. He also held IT security leadership positions at Sony Corporation of America and Pacific Life Insurance Company.

"Thomas is a highly collaborative leader who brings a proven track record of developing strategic IT risk management plans," said Jon Russell, senior vice president and chief information officer at John Muir Health, in a press statement. "We are pleased to have someone with his extensive IT experience and regulatory knowledge joining our executive team."

Thomas earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration from California State University – Fullerton, and is a certified information systems security professional.

John Muir Health is a not-for-profit healthcare organization east of San Francisco. It includes a network of more than 1,000 primary care and specialty physicians, more than 5,500 employees, and medical centers in Concord and Walnut Creek.
