Intermountain Healthcare appointed A. Marc Harrison, MD, 52, as its new president and chief executive officer.

Harrison will take the post when the current CEO Charles Sorenson, 64, retires on October 15, 2016. When he steps down, Sorenson will continue with Intermountain as founding director of the Intermountain Healthcare Leadership Institute, which is expected to open in 2018.

Harrison most recently held positions as chief of International Business Development for Cleveland Clinic, headquartered in Ohio, and CEO of the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, which is a multi-specialty hospital and part of Mubadala Healthcare's network of world-class healthcare facilities.

At Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, he assembled a 3,500 member multi-national workforce and oversaw all aspects of clinical and business operations for the new medical campus, which cared for patients from 31 countries in its first 10 months of operations.

Earlier roles included serving as chief medical operations officer for Cleveland Clinic where he was responsible for a broad range of clinical operations worldwide, and as chairman of Pediatric Critical Care.

Harrison earned an undergraduate degree at Haverford College and a medical degree at Dartmouth Medical School. He completed a residency and an internship in pediatric critical care through the University of Utah School of Medicine, working primarily in the critical care units of Intermountain's Primary Children's Hospital.

His wife, Mary Carole Harrison, served as the chief resident in the same program. Marc Harrison later received a masters of Medical Management from Carnegie Mellon University and completed additional study in management at Harvard Business School.
