Dana Alexander to receive the 2016 HIMSS-ANI Nursing Informatics Leadership Award

The immediate past chair of the North America HIMSS Board of Directors has contributed to nursing and healthcare through leadership roles as an advanced practice nurse, chief nursing officer and CEO.

Dana Alexander has been named the recipient of the 2016 HIMSS-ANI Nursing Informatics Leadership Award. The award is jointly sponsored by HIMSS and the Alliance for Nursing Informatics. The boards of directors of both organizations select the recipient.

Alexander is a recognized industry thought leader, with expertise in population health, accountable care, strategic planning, patient engagement and clinical transformation, HIMSS and ANI said. Her expertise has helped create solutions that improve health outcomes and clinical efficiencies, the two organizations said.

“While Dana’s background is founded in nursing, she works collaboratively with inter-professional colleagues to advance the healthcare transformation enabled by health IT,” said Judy Murphy, chief nursing officer at IBM Global Healthcare. “In the nursing informatics community, she has been a thought leader in working with three partner groups – the American Organization of Nurse Executives, the Technology Informatics Guiding Education Reform initiative, and the National Quality Forum quality measure work. She is an exemplary clinical leader and strategic thinker, and consistently serves as a positive advocate and role model for HIMSS and ANI endeavors.”

Alexander has consistently contributed to nursing and healthcare, HIMSS and ANI said, through previous leadership roles as an advanced practice nurse, chief nursing officer and CEO, with responsibilities spanning the care continuum. For more than 15 years, she has held roles in advising how technology can transform healthcare through innovation and other enabling technologies, the two organizations said.

“As immediate past chair of the North America HIMSS Board of Directors, Dana has served to ensure the continued dedication to HIMSS’s mission to improve health through the best use of technology,” said Joyce Sensmeier, vice president of informatics at HIMSS. “In her tenure as chair, she demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and consistently emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving common goals. Today, Dana serves as a great role model for the HIMSS nursing community.”

As executive director for health advisory at Ernst &Young, Alexander works collaboratively with a wide range of organizations, from governmental departments of health and public sector service providers and payers, to health insurers and private sector providers, to create sustainable healthcare systems that deliver high quality care while being efficient and cost-effective, HIMSS and ANI said. In this role, she brings together professionals from multiple sectors – health, life sciences, technology, telecommunications, consumer products and others – to develop cross-sector perspectives and solutions for transformation and new business models.

Prior to joining Ernst & Young, Alexander served as vice president for clinical advisory at Divurgent LLC. Alexander also served as the vice president of integrated care delivery and chief nursing officer at Caradigm, as well as vice president and chief nursing officer for GE Healthcare.

Alexander will be honored at the Awards Gala on Tuesday February 21 during the 2017 HIMSS Conference & Exhibition.
