California legislator wants Google Maps to blur hospitals
California Assemblyman Joel Anderson wants to prevent users of Google Maps from seeing detailed photos of the nation's hospitals.
Anderson's proposed censorship of Google Map and Google Earth, two satellite image-based, free online tools offered by Google, Inc., would blur images of hospitals, schools, places of worship and government buildings in an effort to prevent terrorists from gathering information about the potential attack targets.
Military officials have indicated hospitals and schools are at risk for terrorist attacks if they can be easily identified via services such as Google Maps, according to UK-based Computer Weekly.
Privacy groups and government bodies in the United States and United Kingdom have convinced Google to blur certain buildings and people's faces in Google's online image resources.
The measure proposed by Anderson, a Republican, would impose fines of up to $250,000 per day for violations of the censorship. Such violations would be considered criminal offenses.
